Product Design [IEFP Internship] Central-North Portugal, PT

Porto, Porto District
Work Type: Internship
We are looking for a Product Designer (internship role) to join our award-winning team in Porto.
Are you excited by the possibilities of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies? Do you believe we can design & develop our own futures? Are you proactive and passionate? Obsessed with form and function?
We’re looking for energetic product design students who have talent for creative problem solving and want to help research, design & deliver efficient, elegant and ethical real world solutions.

Who are we?
We are the DEUS initiative, and we are all about exploring AI in the service of humanity. No, we are not calling ourselves gods(!), but our name is a reference to ‘deus ex machina’ (or god from the machine in Latin). We believe that artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing have a massive influence on the way we live, and we want to make sure that we create a positive impact on the world with these AI services.
As a happy coincidence, DEUS is also an acronym representing the quadrivium of key disciplines we believe are important to building successful AI-powered services: Data / Engineering / User-experience design / Strategy.
DEUS is a new initiative, but the founders have been working together very successfully for years, so there is a comfortable family feel to the company. We have an amazing set of international client partnerships (and projects/challenges). Our headquarters is located in the heart of the city centre of Amsterdam. We also have a team in Portugal that is based out of the beautiful city of Porto with an office close to the beach, and our Spanish team is based out of the charming center of A Coruña!

Who are you?
You tell us! We want to meet you. If you are reading this you are clearly excited by the power of design & technology combined to create better futures.
As a working design intern on the DEUS team you’ll be involved in strategy and concept development, researching user and business needs, and most importantly, designing elegant, easy-to-use solutions to meet those needs. Together with the rest of the team you’ll help from the very first brief through to launch and beyond. Collaboration is the basis of the entire company.
Our thesis position is primarily for masters students who are working on their final project, and with an interest in exploring the crossover between human-centered design and intelligent technologies.

Some of the hands-on tasks you might be doing in this role:
  • Research planning and execution (including qualitative user research and market research).
  • Designing user flows and interactions for complex digital products.
  • Lo-fi and hi-fi prototyping of products & services.
  • Designing beautiful visual interaction or communication elements for the products & services.
  • User testing and proposition validation processes.
  • Creating customer experience journeys, mapping pain points & opportunities identification; developing personas; creating Future Service Blueprints etc.
  • Assisting in design workshops in different timeframes and formats (Design Sprints; Design-thinking workshops; Ideation sessions; value proposition sessions etc.).
...and some more points:
  • You need to meet the eligibility requirements of the IEFP.
  • Communication is key: documenting and presenting design and strategy decisions.
  • Visual and aesthetic acuity is important (beauty can be an extremely powerful tool in creating effective products & services, even if the interface may be invisible).
  • Familiarity with Figma, adobe suite etc. Bonus if you have video/audio skills, UX copywriting, 3D graphics, physical prototyping, environmental/experiential design etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal English is the only core requirement.
  • Note: If you don’t feel that you perfectly fit the description above, but you have some other background or skillset that you think could be of interest, please still get in touch!
We are dedicated to making a friendly and inclusive workplace. To put it bluntly, there is an unwritten ‘no assholes’ policy that applies to both ourselves and our clients, as we always want to enjoy our team dynamic. We do trips, conferences and events together. We are always committed to cultivating a company that celebrates differences and maintains a strong team culture. We fundamentally believe in flexibility, and you will be given a lot of freedom while translating complicated problems into easy-to-use products. This means managing your own priorities, trying out new things and working a flexible hours’ scheme.
